What I have learned about the Big Show

Never give up …. Insights

We learned a lot about this show.  We had heard how well vendors had done from some friends.  But they left out a few details about the show.

  1. Black Friday is not usually busy because we have  a local Civil War football game. However we did have $163.oo in sales
  2. Saturday reported by the vendors we spoke to,   was a day of a lot of looking. Customers just were not buying.    Marie wanted to try” Buy 1 get 1 half off ” sale.  We did this for 2 hours.  It was not my jewelry , not my pricing, it was just the customers were not buying .We did sell two earrings in a bottle.
  3. Sunday was a very bad day for  me, as I could not go to the show because of IBS issues.  On the good side Duane made the first sale of the day for $43.00. They made more sales in the morning and then afternoon nothing.   Today Duane and Marie tried a different approach ” 25% off” sale. Made a little difference but the crowds were not there.
  4. We find out later that day that Next weekend is the busiest.  Friday is a day where they get in free with canned foods. So we will get the seniors and the moms with kids in school, I am told.  Saturday should be based on the past busier.  And Sunday the last day is usually the busiest as customers are expecting sales from vendors that want to unload their inventory.
  5. A vendor next to my sisters booth is selling wire style jewelry that is .999 silver but not sterling.  She has signage that states for example necklaces $39 – $69. Even though each piece is priced. She also states that no handwritten signs everything should be printed and in a sign holder. Looks more professional she says. She was apparently doing ok.  But other jewelry vendors were having sales like us.

We have moved the bottle earrings down to table level as that seems to be were everyone was looking at them. We had them in two heights. So we changed that Saturday and basically put all earrings on one table. We have necklaces and bracelets on the other table.

But while I was at home and thinking about the customer flow I  thought about making a change. 08-DSC_9228 13-DSC_9233

I am going to move the glass shelves to the side isle and the earrings and bracelets to the front isle. The necklace will stay where they are.  Still thinking about this approach have not talked to Marie to see what she thinks.

Marie did go over and help my sister who was also having sale issues.  Marie changed her look as she was also on a corner selling her bags, to a diagonal look.  Kathy would have her back to the corner.  Well must have worked as she made $120 in sales. Her best day.  Thank you Marie for helping my sister too.  I am very blessed to have Marie and Duane and the girls in my corner as well.

I had two customers tell me my jewelry is perfect for Baby Boomers who have the money.  They thought I had well made , good designs, and beautiful jewelry.  They said I needed someone to help me Market my line and that I should go on Shark Tank and go on QVC.  I told them I had my jewelry in two salons. They said nopexpo  that is not the right place for  my jewelry.  They were so cute and you could see the wheels turning as they thought this all out.

Our daughters Elizabeth and Amanda have not sold any of their earrings for $5.00. But no one has even looked at them.  David has sold 2 of his Mind Craft creeper key chains. He has made $10.00.

That is all I have from this weekend of learning about a big show in Portland at the Expo Center.  I know it is not me, my prices, or my jewelry.  It is just the venue. So I am praying that they are right and that the final weekend is the best of show.  To date we have made a total of $268.00.

Never Give Up! is our motto for Howling Dog Jewelry.

Thanks for visiting my blog and reading my story of the Big Show.

First Day Jitters of My Big Show Adventure…..

Where to begin

You know a well planned adventure doesn’t come without any hitches or bumps n the road.  We told Marie we wanted to leave at 6am as we had no idea what Portland traffic would be like. We were going to be prepared for anything. LOL! First of, Marie and Elizabeth were ready to go by 6am, It was the older folks Duane and I that weren’t ready.  You us old folks have to take our pills , have our coffee, take our shots, and don’t realize how much time we really needed as Duane set the Alarm for 5:30am.  So we were off at 6:30 because I needed to pack the too box, get receipt book, a few more earrings, and bracelets.  Then Marie mentions pens  and I am still loog for NOW my red bowl full of clamps to use on the sheets that covers our booth at the end of each day.  I will need to ha So we arrived at the Expo center 45ve another I SPY where is the red bowl Picture next week if I can’t find it.  Marie looked and she sent Elizabeth out to help and none of us could find it.  So we went on our marry way to the show.

We noticed on the way there was NO traffic at all. Everyone in Portland must be out shopping or had the day off.  We arrived 45 min early and they let no one in until 8am.  We finished the setup; 01-DSC_9221pricing, bags, and signs.  Even though we 1-DSC_9228-001had overhead lights it really didn’t make the jewelry behind the glass pop. So we sent Duane off for some under the counter puck lights.                                                                  1-DSC_9234-001    They really made a difference.

Now we are ready for the show to begin.  Started of slow then picked up and I sold two of my bracelets first offf. $69.00.  One of them had the spectra pearls in shades of purple  (sold $20.00) and the other was shades of blue with 2 pf those cute Sparkling Owls from B’Sue Boutique  (sold $49.00). That was a good start.  The day did not really get that much busier. Santa did not even have a waiting line.  So we felt it was a little slow but our booth did $$$ is sales. ( will give total at the end of this weekend)

From what we understand from seasoned vendors this was not bad for the first day. Saturday will be really crazy with a lot of people. Sunday will be busy from noon to 3 or 4 typically.  We have good feelings about Saturday doing even better than today.

We had a good time and the only thing we forgot was Water as their bottles of water were $3.50 each we sent Duane out for some water when he brought Amanda to the show. She had to march in the Thanksgiving parade in downtown Portland.  Ooor Duane was all over town getting us stuff and bringing Amanda.  During is down time he walked the whole show and realized he had forgotten business cards to pass out.  He has 5 more chances for that.  Tomorrow he is taking us and coming home to rest and will be back to pick is all up.

That’s about it for tonight’s blog and to all a good nite. Thank you for visiting and please leave comments.

Next steps on the road to a big show

Inventory System Established

I started with my friend 5 yrs ago, Marie Roozen to make money for Christmas. Jewelry by two friends was born. We found out that Intel had Holiday craft shows on 4 campuses. No fees for the table.  Duane  (my Hubby) just had to be the escort.  So bought $600.00 worth of Gemstones and started creating necklaces  and jewelry sets.  We did this for 3 yrs and then Marie went to college to become a hairdresser.  I had to come up with a different name.

The Howling Dog Jewelry was born due to my little partner Mesha a long hair Chihuahua who liked to sing to mattress commercials. He is now 14yrs old and will sing on command.   Marie was still there to help me sell at Intel. I am very grateful as a blind artistmesha I needed someone with good eyes to help deal with more than one customer at a time. Marie totally understands my eye issues. Howling Dog Jewelry was still a hobby. Inventory what’s that?  I kinda knew what I had and I knew that I made money on each piece. Intel show averaged $600.00  year.

Still with a mindset of this being only a hobby I started selling at a 12 week summer market called Tuesday Night Market Place.  Show cost was $485 for the 12 weeks. My avg. for the past 3 years was about $1100 a yr.. Still NO Inventory per se , I knew I needed something but didn’t know how to start one from  hobby mindset to a business one. Inventory what is it?

IMG_0404

Fast forward to today,  I have finally figured out an inventory system. Now I will be able to track sales, in turn will help me be better at purchasing products for my jewelry lines and styles.  This is a sample of what I came up with:

Love Beetle Rocks Line; BugN, Bug NS, BugB, BugBS, BugE, BugR,BugBr

Rose Jewelry Line; RN, RNS, RB, RBS, RE, RR, RBr

These stand for Necklace, Necklace sets, Bracelets, Bracelet sets, Earrings, Rings, and Brooches

All jewelry has been inventoried , priced, and labeled with inventory codes. Then we will inventory what is on display and a quick inventory at the end of each day. Well, that is an ambitious plan but I think it might help with what sold compared to receipts and check to see if there was any loss do to theft. Or we can just do a final inventory at the end of the show. If you have any thoughts on this please share.

Thank you for visiting my blog.   I will be blogging my experience.

Roses and Roses, Love making Roses

What’s New!!!!  Exciting new looks are happening at the Howling Dog Worktable this week.

Making of a Rose Jewelry line that will also tie into my Love Beetle Rocks jewelry line,

I learned at a very young age from my Aunt to make roses with clay.  She made ceramic roses in the same colors I like to use.  Her Roses were made into earrings, and brooches.  They were the white, pink with the green leaves I have used in my own jewelry designs. The sales of her roses paid for her trips to the West coast to see my Grandmother.   My grandmother always had us doing some kind of craft to keep us busy for the summer.  So when my Aunt came one summer she sat my twin sister and I down and taught us how to make her ceramic roses.  It was a lot of fun and I still have those days with fond memories.

50 yrs later I find myself looking back at those memories and applying what I had learned.  I now make roses from Polymer clay.  A very versatile clay which I love working with today.  I can create all kinds of colors to make my roses.  As I live in Portland Oregon known for their Roses and referred to as THE CITY OF ROSES, I decided to make a new line of simple pendants, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and rings using my roses.  I am using old stampings and tooling of brass from the US and Germany, as I Love the vintage looks and mixed media .  The quality of these pieces are just wonderful.   \7

Here are some of my Roses and works in progress.  Leave a comment and let me know what you think of this new line of Rose jewelry from Howling Dog Jewelry.  Below is my Etsy shop where you can find more jewelry designs by Howling Dog Jewelry.5-DSC_7961 6-DSC_7962 7-DSC_7963

Working on New Focals for Necklaces and earrings

i8l
I am workings on Focals and pendants/  I have a new line of flowers all handmade with rings and vintage lockets.   I love making assemblage or collage jewelry.  My new earrings are hats with a silver pocket watch and howling dogs in earth tones.

Mentoring 5 girls in Handmade Jewelry, Merchandising, and selling at a local Market for the Summer

The girls are my daughters friends for the past 10 yrs. They love coming over to my house and visit. For the past 5 yrs they have watched my jewelry line evolve into what it is today. These girls are a great group of kids who are taking pride in what they are doing. I have always had a soft opening heart when it comes to kids. I think they feel they have another home and feel apart of my family. I started out just doing Intel holiday shows where my husband worked. Then about 3 yr ago I started with B’Sue and Cindy Lietz making jewelry. Some of the girls have made jewelry with me. I would have to say they are my biggest fans.

Even when they are not selling they are always asking how we did as they take part ownership because they are the setup crew. I have been using these teens for this outdoor market going on 4yrs. And this year I literally do not have to setup or take down. So this is why I am adding a new element, The girls get to design the layout, pick out the jewelry they like and now two of them are selling. Layla who designed the booth this week was so pumped that her displays were helping sales. Elizabeth and Ashley were pumped that they worked together making sales.

The girls are learning so much and are having fun. It comes them a sense of purpose and something to look forward to in the summer. My crew even gives me feed back on how the booth looks. But they are really excited about having more input with the displays.

The Final Blog Hop Part Three. B’Sue Boutiques Build a Line Challenge…………….The Love Beetle Rocks Jewelry Line

HELLO,

What can I say.  I joined and I DID IT! My Jewelry line is very whimsical, not serious, colorful, and in  various styles.  I have to say this has been fun and educational.   I did make 5 pieces plus.  If you haven’t noticed through out my Blog I really enjoy making jewelry and playing with polymer clay.

I added ring dishes to the line.  This was one way to use scrap clay and make an accessory for jewelry to my line.  The ring dishes are evolving into my own look.  The only challenge with these is centering them upon the form and making sure they are even.  So with artistic creative licence I am making Whimsical ring dishes.  This way I don’t stress over having it perfect.  With vision issues it is not possible. LOL! Check out the ring dishes at the end of the blog.

Well we started out this challenge with beetle’s running all over my  worktable,  This is the final Blog Hop of B’Sue Boutiques Challenge of creating a 5 piece jewelry line or more.  I have found my artistic voice in this challenge all my jewelry pieces look like they go together, made by the same artist.  I never knew how to make a line make it cohesive through this process with Brenda Sue, my mentor and group interactions I have been able to make my own jewelry line.  Part of my line maybe a limited edition  I am not sure yet. Still mulling over that part of my jewelry line.  I would like to thank Brenda  for teaching us and thank the rest of the group for all their support in this venture.  I now even more ideas then ever on making further lines.

Walking you through my creative process in my decisions on making what I did and how I ended up with branches or off shoots of other lines. I started out with my beetles in two sizes.  The small charm beetles would be accents to my  earrings, smaller pendants or brooches.  Giving  a hint of the beetles with a more subtle look.  The larger beetle needed a body added. As I like to mix Polymer clay with my jewelry  the addition of imitation simulated agates and turquoise did the trick.

So with this beetle designed decided I needed to figure out how or what to put the beetles on.  Rings where an easy decision.  Take a look below ….. Rings

They have imitation agates and turquoise along with polymer clay patterned canes beetle rings mounted on quality brass .  Then I made some with copper ring blanks and the imitation turquoise.  Flower rings are part of another line that ties back to the beetle line. As I have added flowers in both lines. You will also find a very high quality  silver rings   Every Ring is unique with their own personality.

Next are earrings and I created several styles in the Love Beetle Rocks line and the other part of the line I used flowers  and  spoon earrings.

3 style earr

Beetle earrings different styles.  But I can see more designs in the future. This is how I started incorporating the flowers into my other line.

The flowers led to a sub-line with beetles and flowers.

Here it goes with my SUB-LINES FIRST AND THE THE BEETLE ROCKS LINE AT THE END

flower versions

My Love Beetle Flower sub-line consists of:

  • Spoon Necklace beetles
  • Spoon Flower earrings
  • Flower beetle brooch
  • Small flower beetle necklace
  • Charm dangle Necklace
  • Flower Spoon Necklace

Flower Rings and Flower earrings

So the next part of the line was making flower jewelry with Pink and Copper.  I felt this was another addition as to I had used copper in my The Beetle Rocks line and Flowers.

Pink Copper

Pink Copper  sub-line is so pretty.  I love the combination of the two colors.  This consists so far  of.

  • Larger Focal Necklaces
  • Medium size Focal flower Necklace
  • 2 5/8″ Spoon earrings with flowers  and brooches

turquoise collection

The second part of my line The Love Beetle Rocks is my imitation simulated turquoise an d copper.  This is a big hit as the turquoise made by me with polymer clay looks very real.

The copper Turquoise jewelry pieces consist of….

  • Cameo Pendants in Black with copper highlights and in  a copper setting.
  • Copper bracelets with imitation simulated turquoise cameo
  • Copper bracelets with imitation simulated turquoise beetles
  • Copper rings with nugget imitation simulated turquoise

aqua copper brooches , earrings to come

Now for the LOVE BEETLE ROCKS New Jewelry Line

BLUES IMITATION AGATE SMALL FREE FORM NECKLACES

blueagatependant I really hope you have enjoyed my new jewelry lines.  I have really enjoyed making each and everyone.  I especially love making these imitated stones.

The beetles with the flowers look like they crawled under the flower to hide.  But you can still see them.  So this is a more subtle look along with the small charm beetles.

I really feel I got this line and cohesive look thing down.  I have some sub-lines which can go further and end up to be their own line.  I have tried to give choices in styles, colors, sizes, and finishes.

THE ACCESSORY ITEM ARE HAND MADE 3″ RING DISHES ,,,

My beginning process of making a line of jewelry………

First of all I needed a theme to get started. As I mentioned in  my first Blog Hop it would be for the love of beetles and rocks which brought back childhood memories.  This is what happened next…….

Making of the Beetle Bodies…….

beginning

I needed to make the beetle bodies for my new line. I was making imitation agates and turquoise from polymer clay.   A technique I learned from Tory Hughes.

make body

This was the most time consuming part of the whole line.  I love these two technique and I have been given permission from Tory Hughes to teach the turquoise technique at B’Sue Boutiques Weekend Workshop Retreat May 15th – 18th.  It will be lots of fun!

Decision Time…….

As each beetle is unique,  I needed to make a decision as to which body went with which colored beetle and leaf.  Here are some samples ,,,,,
decision

This was my process and no they did not all stay this way.  Beetles were changed and moved several times before I was happy with the look and style.  My line consists of Necklace, ring, brooch, bracelet, and earrings. I went through this thought process with each design.

On March 20th there is a BIG REVEAL of my whole New Jewelry Line

 THE LOVE BEETLE ROCKS!

Talented artists ….. and My creative thinking

I must say there are a lot of talented people in this group. Some of the jewelry focal’s that I’ve been seeing just lately are just beautiful. The designs the flowers the other bugs and the colors are awesome. I feel very honored to be in this group working with all of you and thank you Brenda for your leadership.

I want to see more pictures, I love pictures. My dad said I couldn’t read a book elicit had pictures. I guess that means I’m a visual learner. And right now I am thrilled with how my a get some my turquoise and my faux stones are turning out.

In part of my creativity with my bugs is finding the right body for each bug. You would think that any old faux stone would look good, that’s not the case. I am actually looking at each stoned in trying to find the right body for each bug. So know when you see my bugs there was a lot of thought put into how I wanted them to look. I feel like I am dressing my bugs.

So today I went through all my boxes and looked for all the leaves that I could find in all of my bezels and now they’re all grouped together in little containers so I can find them easier.

I just want to share a little bit of what I’m doing today and admiring all of your work and how you inspire me with my bugs. Some of the newer bugs are going to have cane work is bodies and that’s can create a whole new challenge because I’ll have to decide again what body with which bug.

I’m sorry I talk more when I use my Dragon speak software I can say more, take care and have a great weekend.

  1. And remember the “LOVE BEETLE ROCKS!”
